Graduation Requirements

To graduate from Lorain High School, a student must meet the standards adopted by the State of Ohio and the Lorain City Schools Board of Education. Graduation requirements are as follows:

CREDITS COMPETENCY READINESS GRADUATION

 

EARN 20 CREDITS:
  • 4 CREDITS of MATHEMATICS (Credits must include Algebra II or the equivalent to Algebra II
  • 4 CREDITS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (To successfully fulfill your English course requirements, students will need 4 credits in an English Language Arts course. Credits must include English 9, English 10, English 11 and one English elective.)
  • 3 CREDITS OF SOCIAL STUDIES (Credits must include World History, American History and American Government)
  • 3 CREDITS OF SCIENCE (Credits must include a physical science, biology, and one advanced science elective
  • 5 CREDITS OF ELECTIVE COURSES (Credits must be selected from one or any combination of foreign language, fine arts, business, career-technical education, family and consumer sciences, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs, technology, or English language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies courses not otherwise required. Students must take and complete two semesters of fine arts and 0.5 credits of financial literacy.) 
  • .5 CREDIT OF HEALTH
  • .5 CREDIT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (A waiver is available to students who meet other academic requirements)

SHOW COMPETENCY:
To graduate, students must earn a "competency” score of 684 or higher on the English Language Arts II and Algebra I (or integrated Math I) end-of-course tests or complete other options.

SHOW READINESS:

Students must also demonstrate their preparation for the next steps after high school by obtaining two seals (only one can be a locally defined seal) to demonstrate their academic, technical, and professional readiness for careers, college, the military, or self-sustaining professions.
